July 4 - Fireworks Spectacular

E-mail Print PDF
Currently it is not scheduled to take place for 2011..

The Fourth of July fireworks show at Jones Beach has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to insufficient state police.
Officials said the show is in danger of never returning if the state does not train more state park officers.

The resurrection of the holiday show will depend on whether enough new police officers can graduate from the New York State Police Academy, according to New York State Parks spokesman George Gorman.
"We currently have 56 state police on Long Island; there isn't enough to ensure the safety of everyone at an event like this," Gorman said. "Fourth of July weekend is the busiest weekend we see, state wide, not just on Long Island. We need enough security, or else we unfortunately can't have it."

Gorman said the last police class to graduate from the academy was in 2008. The number of state police on Long Island has decreased from last year, which was 60. Statewide, the number has decreased from 248 to 231. The Department of Environmental Conservation has 254 officers throughout the state, 28 of which are on Long Island, according to Gorman. They also have 115 rangers statewide, with only five being stationed on Long Island.

Gorman said the reason for the loss of state police on Long Island is due to officers switching to other agencies and retirements.  The fireworks show had been held annually at Jones Beach from the mid 90's until it was cancelled last year. The holiday event had become a landmark and memorable tradition at Jones Beach.

It used to be a Fireworks extravaganza above the shores of Jones Beach State Park simulcast to a musical array of patriotic songs. 9:30pm

Sad part is your angry and cursing at the State of NY You just wasted all that energy and got nothing done. Find you local town offical and Nassau county offical and ask them to provide a few officers each. And use some of that expensive home land security communication we have to coordinate to event. Before it turns to junk with age. WTF this is a no brainer I counted 30 plus police stations on google maps within 14 miles. And adding a fire works fee works also. They charge for everything else right?

I hope people wake up soon and see what is happening to this country and take control of their own life. as a matter of fact maybe fire works should be canceled every where in US until it is a independent country again where people will count.

so there's not enough police at nite for a 45 minute fireworks show but its enough police to man the beach all day before the fireworks.. which usually 80 % of those beach goers are the same fire works onlookers.. poor excuse for not having a show .. so why is the beach even open at all?

If the are so short on staff then how did the pull off the airshow. The fireworks show is a 45 min event. The airshow was from 10 to 3 for two days. Smells like bs to me

Whats going on NY?!?!? People are sleeping , the fireworks at Jones beach shouldn't be messed with. smilies/angry.gifWhat do you have to do to get them up and running??? Im sure that if people were more informed then they'd be more inclined to keep it alive... This whole "there's nothing you can do about it" is a complete farce. smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif

this is some b.s. in my eyes. i haven't been able to see a fireworks display in years because of my deployments overseas. this is the first time in years i am can make it, and i want to take my kids to see what their daddy used to see when he was their age. they seriously need to reconsider this, so the Veterans who enjoyed them as a kid can share a fireworks display like they put on all the time there with their kids... LETS KEEP TRADITIONS ALIVE

If it's just a matter of a shortage of park patrol and rangers, why doesn't New York State assign some State troopers to help patrol the beach for the day. They're employed by NYS so what would the difference be....... State Troopers patrol the parkways on Long Island, why can't they be expanded to patrol the parks when needed??? I would think that there are enough NYS State Troopers (Long Island) for our Parkways to be adequately patroled (for this busy day) and still be able to temporarily assign some to the parks department...... You know we had enough Parks Police to patrol the air show on Memorial Day weekend and that is an all day thing for people and it was Saturday and Sunday. Or is this a Union thing...... Heaven forbid you have another union patroling on someone elses turf..... So what happens to the parks if there haven't been any graduates in 3 yrs and you don't have any means to deal with attrition and the parks police department keeps decreasing, are more parks going to be closed or are the State Troopers going to have to start patroling parks???? This isn't just about the 4th of July........

The Department of Homeland Security has over 1000 officers based out of JFK. I am sure that they would be able to supply enough to assist the State Park police in order for the show to go on. Did anyone from the State Park Police think to ask?

I was very upset at the fact that the people at the first toll booth were still charging people $8.00 for parking. Only to find out that once I was past the toll booth, the parking was all over the grass and cars were parked in the road! Terrible, why continue to charge when the parking fields were full to capacity!!! The toll booth person, was so rude and didn't even want to answer any questions!

The fireworks were good but, it was difficult to see them! If all is good next year, will have to rethink going to Jones Beach.smilies/angry.gif
